The SCALAR-EFRC is an interdisciplinary, multi-institution research center that aims to design materials, interfaces, and architectures to revolutionize the performance of energy storage systems. To successfully accomplish these goals, three research thrusts whose goals all align with the larger mission of the center have been created. Thrust 1 has the goal of creating new directions for materials development by determining the electrochemistry of anion redox systems. Thrust 2 has the goal of increasing the electrical conductivity in electrodes while maintaining mobility. Thrust 3 focuses on new architectures and interfaces to improve chemical and mechanical stability of materials during electrochemical cycling. Together, all three thrusts have a multiscale view of materials synthesis that enables new chemistries to be integrated into battery systems.
